A few nights ago I realized that I should probably get a mask to wear when I go grocery shopping, so I looked online for something I could buy, but everything I found was either too expensive, sold out, or had a long wait time. The recent Ivy Style post about Kamakura’s oxford-cloth masks made me realize that I might be able to make my own from an old OCBD I don’t wear anymore.
I have never sewn before, nor do I own a sewing machine, so I did some research and found a YouTube video that provided some simple instructions on how to hand-sew a mask. After an hour and a half of careful sewing, I had one less shirt, some shoes without laces, and a brand-new oxford-cloth mask.
Its plain white color was a little boring, so I decided to add a Brooks Brothers label to the corner to add some ostentatious charm. I’m not sure how effective it will be, but it should look good whether I’m wearing tweed or seersucker. — JACK LEE
Very good. I like it a lot. I meant to raise this question in The Man In The Must-Iron Mask discussion April 19, 2020: If your mask is pleated, is it properly worn pleats up or down?
I assume up per cummerbund style.
The label makes it. Nicely done.
Just saw a little Japanese lady with a blue and white horizontal striped mask with a Lacoste alligator. Mr. Lee’s looks well executed as well. Going Swedish herd style myself.

Funny it reminds me of the Rowing Blazers x J. Press Shaggy Dog sweaters with the label on the outside!
I love the BB label! How fashionable in this time of facial concealment and personal confinement. Well done Jack!
Brooks advertises their unique 7-pleat cuff construction. Should the mask be any different? I see an opportunity here.
That title seems so familiar… (You’re welcome!)
Did you suggest that in the other thread? I thought I came up with it myself!
Love it. Very creative!
It was my third suggestion, but glad to get the validation regardless!
Mr. Lee:
Thanks. Could you please advise the maker of the blue/white university striped OCBD you are wearing in the photo?
Hmm. Having a prominent BB logo on a mask seems like a step in the wrong direction from having commercial logos prominently displayed on your clothing.
After seeing this I have asked the Mrs. to make one out of a BB Prince of Wales pattern shirt that I had to pull out of the line up due to torn sleeve.
