Home Run. or…. Rest Easy. or… Told You. or… Core Strength (apologies to those who think fitness isn’t Ivy – actually I take that back, apology withdrawn). or… US UK. or… Classic Ivy. The book starts mailing today.
K, first off, you aren’t gonna know what I am talking about if you don’t sign up to receive the book in the first place. Sign up here. You are going to receive an Ivy text book for free.. Pay it back by buying something.
I told you if there was someone you want pushing Ivy forward, it was J. Press. And the reason is that there is classic, pure, tried and true Ivy in their DNA. AND. They refuse to step off it. They will add on to it (THANK GOD) but they refuse to step off of it.
I am gonna walk you through pretty much the whole book (you’re welcome) – and here is what you are going to get tired of hearing. Either made in the US or the UK. I was working on an acronym for that, because literally 99.999% of the pieces in here are thus. There is an Italian knit tie in here somewhere. But other than that, if you are a MIUSORUK (pronounced: Made In The US or the UK) person, this catalog is poetry. EVEN if you are a SIUSOROK (pronounced: Sourced In The US or the UK) person, you are going to be up late the night this lands in your mailbox.
Did I mention Sign up here.
Let’s take a walk. The first page of the book is a gentleman with gray hair and a gray beard in this SPOT ON chalk stripe suit. I can relate. To the gray part. Then off we go. To Lovat, “The Home Of Tweed” From the book, “Situated on the banks of the river Teviot in the Scottish border town of Hawick, Lovat Mill is generally recognized as “The Home Of Tweed.”
So take a beat. Press has made absolutely sure that the pieces in the book are traditionally SOURCED. This is INTENTIONAL. Same as they always have.
Let’s keep going. There are wide wale English Corduroy pants in a get-one-in-every-Ivy-color array. Tailored in the USA. There are the Shaggy Dogs, pure Shetland yarns knitted in the Shetland Islands. And of course the Shaggy Stripe, same sourcing and production.
So Shaggy Dog is as pure, unfiltered, unadulterated Ivy as it gets, right? Checks every box in Sharpie. In this new book, J. Press presents Shaggy Dog Sport Coats. From the catalog: “Made of 100% Shetland wool, washed and brushed for an extra soft hand, they’re tailored in our half lined Tailgate model and featured in three mixture shades of blue, grey, and brown.” I can’t show you what they look like (just sign up here already) but the Shaggy Dog Sport Coat is automatically in the canon.
The MTM pages are fantastic too. All tailored in the US. Same with Made To Order. All sewn in the US.
The shirts and ties (ALSO made in the US) are exactly what you would expect from J. Press. Traditional and of the highest quality. And around $40 less than the Brooks oxford, I might add. There is a Cashmere Shawl Cardigan paired with a tie that looks fantastic. When you get your catalog, do this. Put a Post It on the page with the cardigan on it, close the book, leave it on your kitchen counter. Leave it there long enough for your partner to be curious and open it. Then, around holiday time, boom.
If you know Ivy, you know about the Tartans and V-Necks (somebody on the FB group was just asking about V-Necks). What you may not know about is this Dress Gordon Tartan Duffle Coat. Again, can’t show it to you here, but when you get the book, make a point of checking it out. Then get another Post It.
Accessories – spot on. Press stocks Alden Shoes, so support Press by buying yours there.
The book finishes with some more from the Pennant Label, which is now IN CONTEXT. I have spoken at length with J. Press management, and know that the mistake of fishing with too wide a net, the mistake of getting off brand, they will not be repeated here. And the catalog is proof thereof.
Yet another in a series of excellent studies in traditional Ivy from the premier Ivy brand.
Looking very forward to this appearing in our mailbox! Chilly and gray here in Mid-Michigan this morning. And I’m thinking corduroy.
Kind Regards,
H-U
Damn you H-U! Weatherman say it’s gonna be 107 here in Austin, Texas today. It’s ridiculous for September — and as Texans we know something about ridiculous.
Ira Gershwin said it best, “It’s very clear our love is here to stay.”
Thanks for the preview. It all looks great. Like Heinz-Ulrich, I can’t wait for the J. Press Fall Brochure to arrive in the mail. Even though it is sunny and warm here in Virginia today, autumn is on its way.
OK. I’ll jump in. What exactly needs to be specified in the message? Name, e-mail addy, and “request catalogue via e-mail”? No other PII, (Personal Identifiable Information)?
I noticed that in the stack of cords, the rose color is not there this year. I’m not a cords guy and I tend to stick to basics anyway, but the color is striking.
I did ask here last year for a definition for the “tailgate” jacket. Now I see at least a partial definition. That is something I would definitely need to be measured up for, because I cannot tolerate the bound up feeling in the sleeves and underarms when wearing a sport coat over a sweater.
Oh, and acronyms, definitely not “Made in USUK”.

Does it contain the coupons in the back page as in prior years?
So, again, I don’t understand. Is this a .pdf document to be delivered by e-mail, or do I have to provide my physical address.
Hi – so if you want them the send you the catalog, you have to tell them where to send it to. If you want to see it online, then your email address is enough.
It will be available as PDF, but their books are so good, I get the paper and keep them for shopping AND reference.
Good idea. As a rule I prefer print, but was assuming this, too, was a thing of the past.
Done. Can’t wait to see it.
Hi John, I emailed a customer service rep at J. Press late last week, asking for a copy of the new catalogue to be mailed to me. The rep. informed me that they have gone entirely digital, and provided a link to the Pennant Label catalogue (not the mail line catalogue you’re featuring here). Can you confirm if this is true? I would really, really prefer a print catalogue.
Love the book and have loved j.press for 40 years…but, Richard, time to include some other universities in your collection. Ahem, Notre Dame. Get out the sweatshirts and t shirts for the Irish.
One vote for Virginia, too
Second this sentiment, especially as we have (finally!) acknowledged that the style extends beyond eight or nine universities. Know it might be a little clunky to suddenly expand to 20 or 30 universities, but I’m sure we would be willing to pay a little for individual options. Votes for the Great Lakes colleges here (CWRU, Lawrence)
I requested a catalog. Their response is below but this doesn’t look like what the article describes.

So is there a physical catalogue this year?
Thank you, Mark
In the 1980s the back page of the catalog had the surly message “If you want a gift box, ask. WE ARE NOT MIND READERS.”
I think everything I buy this Fall (other than my trusty Redwings) will come from this Squeeze run.
Well done indeed⚓️
I signed up for the book. Being Canadian, I am not holding my breath that they will send it to me as I couldn’t get them to send me the lookbook a couple seasons ago.
