Thursday News Roundup: Sperry Jaws Shoe, GTH Pants, Preppy Sweaters, And Thom Browne’s Bedroom

jaws

Various bits and pieces of sartorial and cultural trivia for you today. First off, a reader alerted me to the rather too clever “Jaws” collection by Sperry. I tweeted it out yesterday and it proved to be vastly more popular that my usual attempts at one-liner wisecracks. In fact, the best wisecrack was delivered on Ivy Style’s Facebook group, where Dan Oliveira wrote, “You’re gonna need a bigger shoe.”

Here it is from the proper angle:

For more “Jaws”-themed content from Ivy Style, check out Christopher Sharp’s ode to the film, New England coastal life, and Narragansett beer, from last year’s Shark Week. We also did a roundup of shark and beer motif items from preppy providers here.

Next, the official Wimbledon website has a tribute to legendary tennis broadcaster Bud Collins, with whom I once had the pleasure of dining with along with Charlie Davidson of The Andover Shop. Charlie and the shop get a mention in the piece.

And speaking of tennis, today I discovered this photo of Fred Perry in 1934 wearing a sweater tied over his shoulders. It seems nearly everything from the Ivy heyday or preppy ’80s has its origins in the years between the wars.

And finally, yesterday at Masculine Interiors I posted a link to new photos of Brooks Brothers Black Fleece designer Thom Browne’s midcentury bachelor pad. When shared with Ivy Style’s Facebook group, Peter Chan quipped that Browne’s bed is as shrunken as his suits. — CC

Wait…what? Thom Browne, the presumably millionaire designer, sleeps in a slightly cleaner, slightly crisper version of my prep school dorm room?!?

This explains a lot about the aestheritc he’s advocated… “organ-grinder monkey minimalist”

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear….

  2. Ugh, am I the only one who is really sick of mid-century modern? When is Victorian opulence coming back?

  3. I blame Bauhaus!

There was something oddly pleasing about the brashness of Bud Collins’ attire. While some might say it smacked of “pay attention to me!”, I saw it as more jovial than attention seeking. On the other side, Thom Browne consistently took something good and made it look like the costuming of an extra on PeeWee’s Playhouse. Almost grotesque.
