This year marks the 50th anniversary of the year 1967, the year we’ve come to refer to around here as the end of the heyday of the Ivy League Look. We plan to make it a theme throughout 2017 as we gather photographs and anecdotes about this pivotal transition year in American social history.
It’s also the 50th anniversary of the first Super Bowl. Here’s what the crowd looked like in 1967, as captured by the Associated Press. An exceptionally dressy gathering of football fans by today’s standards, and this is Los Angeles.
Which might explain the flamboyant fan in the center with double-breasted blazer and what looks like an ascot. Perhaps he’d just gotten off work at Paramount Pictures. — CC
Left Berkeley in June of 1965. Returned in the fall of 1967. Two of my favorite Ivy clothiers had closed in the interim.
Also remarkable is the guy in the far left wearing a cardigan and smoking a cigarette. In the late 60s, smoking was permitted indoors as well, even during lectures at Ivy colleges. Today, such behaviour will get someone thrown in jail. Some things have improved over time (social mores) while most things have deteriorated (e.g. men’s fashion).
When blown up, this picture is like a collection of vignettes, each with its own little story inside the big one.
Look at the guy in the center of the picture. His right arm is in a cast.
The woman holding her husband’s chin is priceless. My kind of lady.
My dad was at that game. I came along shortly there after.

Maybe if more people wore suits to football games I’d be interested in attending a few.
There were ash trays on every table in our library at school in the early ’80s. Plenty of popped collars too.
In my neck of the woods, every once in awhile on cable there is a replay of the 1970 Orioles/Reds World Series games. And my reaction to shots of the fans in the stands back then is similar to comments on the photo of the football fans, above: it’s hard to believe that people actually looked like this in public, in particular at a sporting event. It, unfortunately, just seems so alien. I was born in 1970, so I feel somewhat nostalgically “attached” to the images; but in reality they might as well be from the Middle Ages.

The law school at Washington and Lee in Lexington, Virginia had a smoking section in the study carrels in 1985. Now, as stated above, smoking is a near capital offence. The three men’s clothing stores in town from that era are now reduced to one, but at least it still carried some traditional clothing the last time I looked in.
