Who was that in yesterday’s pic of Muhammad Ali? None other than the great singer Sam Cooke, who died of a gunshot wound in 1964 at the age of 33.

He’s pictured above in tab collar and emblematic tie, which appears to depict a griffin or lion rampant. The grass background even suggests a campus setting.

One of his biggest hits was “You Send Me,” which he wrote himself and released in 1957. — CC

Almost posted “Twistin’ The Night Away.” Pretty hard to have the Monday blues when listening to that song. But “You Send Me” matches the top photo.

  4. Mr. Cooke is one of my favorite singers as well. I like the Portrait of a Legend collection. It has a lot of great songs such “You were Made for me,” “Sad Mood,” “Bring it on home,” and more. This post also reminds me of these lyrics.

    “Listen now
Sam bought you cake and ice cream
    Called you cherry pie
Ray Charles called you his sunshine
    But you’re the apple
    Apple of my eye, oh”

OCBD, checked on your site earlier today. Bravo on the “top of the pops” headline.

  6. Live at the Harlem Club is an amazing album. In my opinion the live version of “Bring It On Home To Me” is one of the iconic sounds in rock/R&B history.

  7. Thank you, Christian. You have had too many good ones to mention.
