Just Shoot Me

I have the dubious distinction of being one of the most unphotogenic style writers ever. By the time most photographers are done trying to get a decent shot of me, a new version of their camera has come out.

But Unabashedly Prep’s Fred Castleberry just snapped a few quick shots and voila: yours truly in black and white.

It’s actually not quite that monochrome: That’s a blue university-stripe oxford with the herringbone jacket and deep-charcoal flannel trousers, and there’s gold in those gray and charcoal argyle socks.

Fred’s a great fellow who, like Lawrence at Sartorially Inclined, has a surprisingly deep voice for a guy with a five-syllable adverb in his blog name. — CC

  1. Nice. I was watching episodes of Get Smart recently; the Chief always had a look related to this one, and it’s just right.

  2. You have contradicted your premise that you are unphotogenic!

  3. What a sweetheart! I chalk it up to Fred’s impeccable timing to keeping me from looking constipated.

  4. And I just saw that Edward Platt, who played the Chief, attended Princeton. Who would have thought(or at least googled…)?

    Where’s the dandy beard gone?

  6. It’s coming back Fall 2011 with the launch of Urban-Lumberjack.com.

Really good down to the waist, then it goes Wallace and Gromit, I’m afraid.

  8. Ignore Admiral CLOD on this one. The man thinks that to wear a bourgeois HERPES scarf is to be daring. I imagine that he orders his “kwass-ohn” from La Madeleine.

  9. I really like the look and well your site. I love the grey jacket with the charcoal. And great job on the tie bar it finishes the look nicely.

  10. All the gear, no idea.

  11. Every time someone leaves snark on the web a demon gets its wings.

Excellent photo. An old leather satchel/briefcase would have been nice to see. But all-in-all, very smartly dressed.

  13. I think the saying articulates a point some may have been trying to make about this photo.

The items of clothing are obviously very nice, but everything’s too neat and perfect, the slight sloppiness that makes IVY interesting isn’t there, ya know?

  14. No worries, Nice Boy. Anonymous posters on the web have also said my writing lacks soul.

  15. As a UK reader i would like to say – VERY NICE. Ivy Style here is not the English style (obviously) but it certainly has an influence in all dress matters. Personally i go for the ‘English Gentleman’ look but like to incorporate elements that lift the style – like the Ivy look. Here you sport a tie clasp (very nice), the shoes are just wonderful, and show flair. The bag is ‘too new’ and where possible one should always sport bridle leather. My only main criticism would be the tone of the clothing. You have a light colouring and dressing in dark grey and black adds an element of ‘gangster’ look to you. I am afraid that the sun-glasses further enhance that and do nothing for me (nor you in my humble opinion).
Finally – i love the site and check it daily. Well done sir.

  16. I would not say you are unphotogenic – quite the opposite! I love the jacket / necktie / sunglasses.

  17. I know that it’s good not to have too big a head, but damn, you are looking sharp. Nice to know I’m taking style tips from someone looking so dapper.
