Ivy Trendwatch: Hipsters Move On

For the last couple of years, one of the recurring refrains on the trad forums and blogs has been an impatient wish for the Preppy/Ivy/Trad/Americana (PITA) trend to go away so that stubborn fuddy-duddies can go back to being behind the times.

Rejoice, gentlemen, for that day is here: Mark McNairy, arguably the leading guru of “Take Ivy” fashion hipness, has decreed the Ivy trend officially over on this $12 handkerchief.

    Pretty funny, actually.

  3. Their acronym bears an uncommon resemblance to the normal meaning which is “pain in the ass”. Why do I not think that is accidental?

  4. I have dressed the same since my mom started dressing me as a prep/trad as a very young child. I became a bit bothered when people I would meet thought I was simply being trendy/hipster. I have been waiting for the hipsters to move on to the next trend for some time.

  5. No. I resist this trend.

I’ll take J. Press style and all that goes with it any day. MM should embrace it instead of trying to kill it off. Century of greed garners this sort kill for the love of money mindset.

  6. This article hipsters and trends brought up a far reaching thought. Around 1965 or so, I remember a movie called Kitten with a Whip. It starred a teenage Ann-Margaret, and forty something John Forsythe. John is a big shot who innocently befriends Ann (a runaway). Ann and her hoodlum friends cause a lot of grief to John.

The point of my comment is that her two hoodlum friends of college age would look quite ivy and preppy today. The intellectual one wore a corduroy blazer, button down shirt and tie, and an ivy type snap brim cap. The other guy, the maniac, wore a sweater and probably tan or white jeans, looking like a blond surfer. In that year, their attire was probably looked upon as extremely anti-establishment, and very radical.

Wish I had John’s Crown Coupe Imperial in the show. Too bad it was distroyed in the show, along with the hoodlums’ Chrysler convertible. Imagine, juvenile delinquents driving a Chrysler. Cheers!

Well that was the laugh out loud moment of the morning.

  8. Most excellent news.

  9. I’m not a fan of hipsters or trends…but I was attracted to this style when it started to become hip…i’ll admit it, I wasn’t born into the style, but now that I’ve found it, I plan stay with it for the rest of my days

  10. Agreed with willissA. I can see myself going slightly in the hipster direction in college (will be a freshman in the fall), but that’s because of my philosophies and music/arts tastes. Growing up in a small New England town, fashion hasn’t ever been something people talked about. I became interested in PITA in the early fall this year, but when I look at it, my whole life I’ve had those two or three collared shirts that I would wear to school on days I felt like stepping it up. In the long run, I can’t see myself ever breaking away from PITA.

What I’m thinking about is how form-fitting items seemed to be all the rage for S/S and F/W 2010, but now I’ve seen a few mentions of baggier styles coming back for S/S 2011. I think it looks terrible. Who’s “right”? Which is the classic: slim styles or the baggier ones? And is the Go-to-Hell look as timeless as it’s made out to be, or trendy as well?

But what will those UK freaks do without their precious made-up “Ivy” persona? Just resume being an irrelevant crippled loser I suppose.

“Form-fitting” “slim” styles are gay soft porno.

    Love the scare quotes.

  14. Mark McNairy is a psuedo-prep hipster idiot.

heh heh…turns out they do read and obsess over every little comment here. Because they don’t care, and all that.

    snicker.

  16. Mark McHairy needs a shave and a proper haircut. And socks. Would it kill him to wear socks between his suit and brogues?

It’d be nice if he got his mega-hyped shoes out of men’s fashion blogs and into on-line retailers, too, but I’m not sweating it: I’m not interested in most of them and can’t afford any of them.

Perhaps it should be, ‘Dead Ivy’.

  18. Gotta get me one of them. So misterman was just passing through. I guess redesigning old designs does not a designer make.

Close. Moving on is actually what makes him a designer. The nature of design/fashion is that it changes. And nothing, of course, is completely immune to fashion; it’s simply a matter of degree.

    Fashion rules everything.
