  1. She was America’s grandmother, helps that she reminds me a lot of my own grandmother, pearls and all. I don’t think we’ll ever have a WASPy First Lady like her ever again, R.I.P.

  2. Also, check out 43. He looks like he belongs in ‘Take Ivy.’

A really wonderful lady. Rest in peace.

    GS,

    43?
    ‘Take Ivy’?
    The dog or Jay Leno?

  5. Huntington, I was referring to Dubya also known as ‘43’ as in the 43rd President of the United States of America.

  6. Even if most of them date from the last 20-30 years, the world depicted in that Town & Country slideshow feels impossibly long ago, and impossibly lost.

FLOTUS 41 reminds me of my granny Belle…faux pearls (she could afford the real ones) no nonsense or speaking ill of people (although she had her favorites and lesser favorites) never complained about physical ailments (a person doesn’t need to give constant weather reports) and wasn’t afraid to roll up her sleeves and get muddy.
    RIP Mrs. Bush

  8. They are loved here in Texas. If you’ve ever had the privilege to meet 43 or Mrs. Bush, you would understand why. Both acted like they were pleased to meet you whether you were a billionaire or a janitor. ( And at the end of the event, they probably remembered your name.)

I live in Texas too and have heard similar about 41 and her. However, I’ve also heard she could and would speak her mind — with a dash earthiness. Also keep in mind, most pols have incredible memories for names but not always for arms trades.

  10. I had the privilege of meeting President G H W & Mrs. Bush over dinner at the Greenbrier in WV. I was taking a long weekend before law school interviews & being in my twenties, I simply walked over & said “hello.” They spoke with me for over 5 minutes. They were genuinely delightful & gracious. I think recall Mrs. Bush stating that The Cloisters & Greenbrier were their favorite vacation resorts.

    Thanks for deplatforming me, hypocrite.

  12. Joel, if you think I’m the source of your problems in life, you’re even more deluded than is apparent. Your problem is you.

I don’t need your troll comments on my website. Moreover, it’s not a good use of your time today, a day you will never get back, nor is it a constructive long-term strategy for the future.

Next time you’re on the Internet and are tempted to forego all self-respect by sinking to the level of leaving anonymous troll comments on a website because you’re projecting all your unsorted shit onto the website’s editor or random people in the comments section, back away from the computer and:

    jog around the block
    do 20 push-ups
sign up for a martial arts class; the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
sign up to learn a musical instrument; the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
    meditate/pray
look in the mirror and ask “Who am I and why am I here?”
    read Epictetus

Basic stuff like that. Good luck.

    C.

  13. C,

Had to look up de-platforming. In any event, gentlemanly response and sound advice to Mr. Feldman.

To the point of the post, the Bush Family, as well as the entire country has indeed lost someone special.

    Best regards,

    BC

CC, that sounds like the making of a great article entitled, “Advice for Trolls…”

  15. Far right–Marvin Pierce’s tassel mocs. Terrific. Come to think of it: time for a new pair of Alden 563’s.

Joel the troll was a sad old troll and a sad old troll indeed.
He spouted liberal hate, as he was deplatformed in a spate, and he disappeared with a finger stroke on a key.

Bar never took a paycheck. Everything was as a volunteer, even as a young woman.

  18. What a stately, dignified testament to one of the finer expressions of a bygone era. Hard not to get a bit wistful, even as we lean into an always uncertain future.

  19. Muted madras is hard to find. Shades of navy, tan, olive, and maroon. These days the market is dominated by ‘bold & loud.’

  20. @SE: if you’re willing to ‘pay the freight’ ($$$), O’Connell’s has some great muted madras for upcoming warmer weather (both short- and long-sleeves). Significantly less expensive – although still made of Indian-woven fabric – Land’s End also has some options.

As for Mrs. Bush, even in those old pics (when they were both young), she always looked more mature than GHWB. She did, indeed, seem like a very genuine person, motherly but not the least bit afraid to take people to task, whether it be part of her own brood or the current occupant of her former home.

Oh Christian, you should definitely write a guide to trolling. You’ve made a career out of it, so you probably know a few tricks.

Here are a few I’ve learned from observing you:
    1. Don’t post anything explicitly racist, just post things that appeal to racists, so you can maintain deniability.
    2. Whine about free speech and deplatforming whenever it’s convenient, but deplatform your opposition any chance you get.
    3. If anyone criticizes you, just call them a troll so you don’t have to respond to the criticism.

I’m sure you have lots of other tips for trolls. Maybe you can even monetize it, since it turns out that insurance companies won’t pay for psychoanalysis from a grad school drop out and most of your pseudo old money cult are too broke to pay out of pocket.

  22. Joel,

    God bless you, anyway.

Once again, I am reminded that black students educated in northern schools have higher IQ’s than white students educated in southern schools.

    Bless your heart, Will.

  24. I am good friends with black people, some who have superior intellects than myself. They are my brothers and sisters, as, unfortunately, are you.

    Find peace.

    Will
