For reason us Yanks find puzzling, Perkins is revered as a kind of Ivy demi-god in England. We’ve only featured him once here, so it’s time for another nod.

Perkins embodied the edgy-rich-kid-from-Brookline type that populated Jonathan Edwards and talked about being a writer or a poet. Most of them ended up as corporate lawyers…
I think squares appreciation month needs a post about the Chafee family of Rhode Island. Classic Ivy League. Governors, Senators, Secretaries of the Navy.

I have often thought than an actor’s best performance comes when the character and the actor have much in common. Mr. Bates and Mr. Perkins were very much alike (though Mr. Bates carried his anxieties to an extreme end).
In my youth, I always considered Tony to be an Ivy Style dresser and he was descended from a Mayflower passenger so I guess he had to be square. Attended Columbia and his driving ambition was to be an actor. He married late in life, had two sons and died after 19 years of marriage in1992.
His widow, Berry Berenson, was murdered in the 9/11 attacks aboard American Airlines flight 11 from Boston at the World Trade Center. The twenty year anniversary of that evil event is approaching.
As a european I kind of like Anthony Perkins. He is square for sure but he is also kinda cool. Don’t know which is stronger. And he also had a european phase when he lived in Paris. He was for sure, -as we all are btw, on different levels- a victim of his past, (relationship to the mother for instance). But he still remains as @bb says a sweet person, wearing a lot of cool Ivy Style stuff. At least for us in Europe.
Cool. Anyone that gorgeous is automatically going to elevate whatever he’s wearing and during his 20s and 30s Perkins dressed in an impeccable classic style. I just finished a biography on him and we’re told over and over how amazingly physically beautiful he was when young and how his looks made an impression on virtually everyone he met. I’m not young and Perkins was literally old enough to be my father, but I have never associated him with my parents. They could be from different planets. There’s something timeless about his looks, I can’t explain it. Sure, his lapels may be narrower than is fashionable today or his ties thinner but in general, his looks and clothes don’t usually read like they’re from a distant period, as is true of some actors.
Always an extremely handsome man, he looked a little odd later on when he dressed more fashionably, for example, after he was married to Berry Berenson and went on the Mike Douglas Show wearing ultra-wide pants. Look at this video at 0:13: https://youtu.be/cnntvFWcXFc He’s tall enough to carry off the look, but he doesn’t look like himself to me. Fortunately, in time he returned to a more conservative look.

I think it’s from “Tall Story.” Perkins plays a student at college called Custer. The letter on his cardigan appears to be a “C.”

I used to think 9/11 was the biggest thing of my life until this little pandemic came along.
