  1. What’s that on Grandpa’s tie? It’s hard to see the club pattern.

    I.A.

  2. The blobs on the tie are little depictions of Martha’s Vineyard. Not sure about the blazer crest. Hyannis Yacht Club?

  3. Great photos! — and I love the topic.

I believe grandpa is wearing a Virginia tie on MV – its nice to have visitors and I’m sure they had a wonderful time.

  4. It’s an outline of Martha’s Vineyard.

  5. The tie that is depicted in the picture is an old (no longer produced) classic by Murray’s Toggery Shop. And yes, it’s little “Martha’s Vineyards.” For those of you not Vineyarders, that’s a Nantucket (and, up until this past season, Vineyard) men’s and women’s shop that sells classic New England clothing.

Nonetheless, the tie is the same that is depicted in the movie Jaws (also shot on the Island, but called Amity Island). The tie was worn by the man who accompanied Alex Kitner’s mother at Edgartown Wharf. He was wearing the exact same tie.

Hope this helps. As much as I love this blog, it worries me that I’m the first to explain this.

  6. Also, great photo of Chappy lighthouse.

  7. I like how the people in the first three photos have the same slightly bemused, slightly dour facial expressions. New England.

Looks like the one we’re calling Grandpa is wearing a pinned collar. Or is it a tab collar? Either way, a great look. And I would love to have seen someone attempt to bust on him for “prole gap” or the undimpled tie knot. The withering look of scorn he would bestow would be priceless.

@ Charlottesville: You beat me to the punch, Sir! Hahahaa! factually and truly, exactly what I was thinking and going to say! Ha!

    Several items:

Can anyone make out what is on the first fellow’s polo shirt? It looks like either a polo mallet or a long stem briar resting over something else.

I assume that the gentleman in the second photograph is wearing a double breasted blazer, but somehow I want to believe that he is wearing a peaked lapel single breasted sack….a double breasted sack blazer would be just as perfect though – and much more likely, and his collar bar is quite natty.

Anyone else notice the hint of a dart both above, and beneath the third fellow’s crossed and folded arms? I wonder if one of the trolls will try to revoke his Ivy/Trad card seeing as how he’s wearing a darted jacket, pocket scarf, and (gasp!) a sport shirt with neither a standard placket nor a button down collar! 😉

these are wonderful pictures and I really appreciate how they aren’t cookie cutter clones of “the look”. This is refreshing, and realistic. Thanks for putting these up Christian!

For my money, these have a rather late 1960s feel to them.

  11. The girl on the left with the horizontal striped shirt and jacket looks amazingly like an old flame named Katherine who was a William and Mary student back in the ’80’s. I had occasion to visit W&M last week and was not impressed favorably by the male student’s way of dressing. I saw a few preppy dressed girls but most wore yoga pants and t-shirts. You know, I really don’t have any problem with girls in yoga pants. Just saying.

    Cheers,

    Will

Back in the 50s, 60s, 70s, MV was thought of as Democrat. Nantucket as Republican. No idea what actual registration was though most likely Democrat.

what’s the deal with Robert De Niro and Ben Stein’s “old man” love child skulking around the Vineyard???
He looks like he walked off the set of Good Fella’s…Hahahah
