A LIFE in Brief: The Kennedy Clan

On newsstands now is one of those book-like magazines LIFE puts out when someone important dies — in this case, Edward Kennedy. “The Kennedys: End of a Dynasty” provides plenty of photos and family history for those who don’t want to wade through a full biography. I especially liked this photo of JFK from 1946. — CC

We probably won’t see the likes of them in our lifetime. Whether you agree with their politics or not, you have to admit that that family had a greater impact on post-
War America than any other political dynasty did. Ted Kennedy probably affected the lives of more Americans with his legislation than did any other senator since we began electing our senators in 1913. The Kennedy Clan also set high standards for grace, civility, and fashion. Maybe that’s why they have been considered America’s Royalty for so many years.

  2. Great impact on post-war America, yes. High standards for fashion, yes. But they set high standards for drunkenness and womanizing, not grace and civility. How much grace and civility did Ted Kennedy show Mary Jo Kopechne during her hours at the bottom of Poucha Pond?
